Toothbrushing Basics

Because brushing your teeth is probably not the most complicated thing you will do during your day, you may think that there isn’t much to it. But here is a question: Are you doing it correctly?
Believe it or not, there is more to brushing your teeth than you may think.

First of all, you need to have the right tool. Find yourself a soft-bristled toothbrush. If the bristles are too hard, they can damage your teeth and gums. If you have trouble with holding a toothbrush, or have issues with range of motion in your arms, you might opt for an electric toothbrush. It’s a good idea to replace your toothbrush every three months, or sooner if it is showing signs of wear. If the bristles are no longer standing straight up, it is time for a new toothbrush.

Hold your brush at 45-degree angle to your teeth and brush away from the gumline. It’s easy to remember to brush the outside of your teeth, since their easy to see. But don’t forget to brush the insides, and the biting and chewing surfaces of your teeth as well. And brush your tongue. The tongue can harbor a great deal of bacteria that can contribute to tooth decay and bad breath.

You should brush your teeth in the morning and and night. How long should you brush? It might surprise you to learn that your dentist recommends that you spend at least two minutes brushing your teeth. Try timing yourself when you brush to see if you are taking enough time.
